Jefferson
Highway Challenge Cache
|
| Geocaching is the latest and greatest sport for
the GPS generation. It is basically a world wide treasure hunt where
things are hidden and using a gps you find them. There is a cult of people
named "geocachers" who spend lots of their free time and even
their holidays to hunt for these hidden treasures. All of this gaming is
"refereed" by the website www.geocaching.com
where you can find anything and everything about this excellent hobby.
As people find these "caches" they register their finds with www.geocaching.com
and grow in stature as more and more geocaches are recorded in their name.
There are also games set up where people find geocaches in
"challenges" with caches that are all related to something like
our Jefferson Highway.
We are pleased to announce that the
Pine to Palm
Highway has it's very own geocache challenge thanks to Jerry and
Donna Piepmeier and Brian and Carlin Yonke all of the Kansas City, MO
area.

(Why are Jerry and Donna wearing jackets in
New Orleans and t-shirts in Winnipeg?) |
|
In order to verify their
research and have some geocaching fun on the Pine to Palm route Jerry and
Donna traveled to both ends of the Jefferson Highway. Since they live in
Kansas City, which is about half way, they headed first to New Orleans
geocaching along the way and establishing some original caches of their
own for the Jeff. In Texas they even found a cache already called "Jefferson
Highway". Cool! |
After returning to
their home in Kansas City for a short break they again hit the road this
time heading north and made it all the way to Mile 0 of the Pine to Palm
Highway in Winnipeg where they met David McDowell our point man at that
end. |
